The American Spirit Awards are given each year in a fast-paced ceremony to those extraordinary individuals who exemplify the best of the American spirit, demonstrating their commitment to upholding and defending our constitutional democracy, to freedom, to equality, to dignity for all, and to the common good.
These heroes include awardees Nancy Pelosi, Judge J. Michael Luttig, Henry “Skip” Gates, Ambassador Bill Richardson. Secretary Jeh Johnson, Lt. Col (Ret.) For elevating the discourse on race and the achievements and struggles of Black Americans, we honor Harvard University's Hutchins Center Director for African and African American Research, historian, and Emmy award-winning filmmaker “Skip” Gates.
FRED GUTTENBERG / CITIZEN ACTIVISM
For his passionate crusade against gun violence and his call for thoughtful gun safety measures following the murder of his daughter Jaime in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, we honor Fred Guttenberg.
JUDGE J. MICHAEL LUTTIG / COURAGE IN PUBLIC SERVICE
For his courage and wisdom and role in preserving our democracy by advising former Vice President Mike Pence that he could not overturn the 2020 election results on January 6th, 2021, we honor celebrated legal mind and former federal Judge J. Michael Luttig.
